How I Decluttered my Wardrobe Space

28 January 2018

Whenever it comes to clearing out my wardrobe, my room etc, I can be pretty rubbish, because I'm quite sentimental about things and always think 'I might need this one day', or 'I can't let this go'.

Recently I moved bedrooms in our house and therefore decided that it would be a great time to completely blitz my wardrobe of things that I felt I really didn't need. Usually, I have found this task quite tricky, normally only chucking out about 2 or 3 items of clothing, and reckon I'm not alone in this. So I figured I'd give you a few little tips that always seem to make it easier for me to clear out my clothes whenever I feel it necessary.

HAVE YOU WORN IT IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS?

If you come across items of clothing that you cannot even remember buying, or have just been sat at the back of your wardrobe or drawers for at least 6 months, the chances are that you probably aren't going to get any wear out of said item anytime soon.

Of course, every so often you find that little gem that you thought you'd lost, or have come to love again (I did exactly this the other day), but most of the time this is, unfortunately, not the case. The number of times I've found a top and wondered what on Earth I saw in it in the first place.

CAN YOU SEE YOURSELF WEARING IT AGAIN?

This might seem like an obvious thing to ask yourself, however I can recall endless times when I've decided to keep something and still never worn it even a year later. If you're struggling to decide whether to keep an item, just think: if you're looking for an outfit, would you ever reach for the item? If not, then there's probably a good chance it won't be worn again.

DOES THE ITEM HOLD A SPECIAL MEANING?

Of course, there can be many items of clothing in your wardrobe that you could never part with, simply because they're a reminder of special occasions, great days etc. For example, I have bridesmaid dresses, wedding guest dresses, items of which that I could never see myself parting with. So, as much as it might clear a lot of space, if there are things like these, just don't give them away unless, of course, you know someone who might be in need of such an item. With more expensive clothes, I'd much rather give them to somebody I know, to be honest.

BUT NOW YOU'VE HAD A CLEAR OUT, WHAT DO YOU DO WITH EVERYTHING?

At some point, you've reached the stage where you've cleared out everything you possibly can. But what do you do with everything? Well, usually I'd take my stuff down to the local charity shop, but if there are things you think you can make some decent money from, try selling them. There are so many ways, such as using Ebay, DePop, posting on social media...for experience, I can tell you that not everything will sell, but it's definitely worth a try.
